History and General Information

Kiichiro Toyoda founded Toyota Automobiles in 1937, as part of the Toyota Industries Group. While it was a minor division of the parent company, Toyoda built the Toyota AA vehicle and designed the Type A engine. During the Second World War, the company built trucks for the Japanese army. And in 1947, Toyota Automobiles released the Toyota SA, which was its first commercial passenger vehicle. During the 1950s, Toyota exported the first Japanese manufactured vehicles to the US, respectively the EL Salvador and Land Cruiser. In 1994, Toyota built its first crossover SUV, the RAV4, which made its debut in Europe during the same year. Today, Toyota Motor Company is a leading hybrid and electric cars producer and Toyota is one of the most popular car brands worldwide.

Development Throughout the Years

After the Second World War, Toyota resumed car production but had more market success with buses and trucks than with cars. Still, the company introduced the Toyota Model SA or Toyopet in 1947. The Model SF followed closely but had the same small 27 hp engine as the Toyopet. A more powerful model, the RH launched soon after. By 1955, Toyota had a turnover of 8300 cars per year. During the same year, Toyota introduced the Land Cruiser and the Crown. During the 1970s the Corolla became a best seller in the US. However, in the luxury segment, Toyota was facing problems with sales of the Crown and the Cressida. At the start of the 1990s Toyota became famous for low-cost maintenance and reliability, which made it one of the most popular car brands. And to win over a younger audience, it launched the Celica and MR2 models.
